Apple Watch Series 12 Now Takes Notes. Here’s Why We’re Not Worried.

You're mid-conversation with a client. Something important just came up. Your Apple Watch buzzes. A message from someone else. You dismiss it. The conversation continues. Later, you check Siri Recap. It summarized the meeting... well, kind of. It missed the part where your client changed the scope. It didn't catch who said what. The audio doesn't exist anymore, because Apple doesn't store it.

That's the Apple Watch Series 12 as an AI note taker in 2026.

We built Memoket Gem, a dedicated AI wristband designed to wear alongside your Apple Watch. So when Apple announced Siri Recap and Granola launched its Watch app, we read everything. We've tested both. And we're going to tell you exactly what we think, without softening it.

Siri Recap: Apple's Built-In Note Taker for the Apple Watch Series 12

Apple Watch's new AI features are normalizing the idea that technology is always listening | TechCrunch

Siri Recap is a native feature on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, announced at Apple's September 2026 event. It uses ambient listening to capture nearby conversations. Apple Intelligence then generates a title, summary, and key points, available in the Siri app. There's also Live Rewind: double-press the Digital Crown and you get a recap of the last 15 seconds of conversation.

You can set Siri Recap to always-on, schedule it, or turn it off entirely. Apple says audio is never stored, processing happens on-device, and recaps are end-to-end encrypted. For a quick hallway catch-up or a casual debrief, it delivers something. That's real.

Now here's what they didn't put in the keynote.

What Siri Recap doesn't do

  • ✕ No speaker identification. Siri Recap produces a summary of your conversation. It does not know who said what. In a meeting with multiple people, it cannot attribute quotes, track decisions by person, or tell you who agreed to what.
  • ✕ No audio archive. Apple explicitly says raw audio is inaccessible. If the summary gets something wrong, and AI summaries do get things wrong, there is nothing to go back to. The original conversation is gone.
  • ✕ Series 12 and Ultra 4 only. Siri Recap requires the latest Apple Watch hardware. If you're on Series 11 or older, you're not getting it. That excludes a significant portion of Apple Watch users today.
  • ✕ It still runs on a notification device. Siri Recap is running on the same hardware that vibrates when someone replies to your email. A call comes in and the experience breaks. An urgent message arrives and you're out of meeting mode. Apple Watch was not designed to be ignored. It was designed to be glanced at constantly. That is the opposite of what a meeting requires.
  • ✕ Battery drain. Ambient listening with Apple Intelligence on top of your existing Apple Watch workload is not free. For most users already managing daily Apple Watch battery carefully, this is a real concern.

The honest summary: Siri Recap is a convenience feature built into a watch. It will help you remember the gist of a short conversation. It will not give you a searchable, attributed, archived record of what happened.

Granola for Apple Watch: The App Solution

Using Granola on Apple Watch - Granola Docs & Help Center

Granola, the AI meeting notes app, launched its Apple Watch companion in July 2026, a month before Apple's announcement. The pitch: start recording in-person meetings with one tap from your wrist, without pulling out your phone or laptop.

The experience is clean. Tap to start, the screen turns green, you have your meeting, tap to stop. Granola's AI turns the audio into structured notes with highlights, decisions, and action items. Meeting reminders come through as haptic alerts.

But Granola for Apple Watch is a remote control for your iPhone, not an independent device. Here's what that means:

  • ✕ Requires your iPhone nearby. Audio is captured on the watch but processed on your paired iPhone. No iPhone, no notes.
  • ✕ Needs a connection to generate notes. You can record offline, but notes don't appear until the audio syncs. In environments without reliable connectivity, that's a problem.
  • ✕ Still runs on a notification device. Same problem as Siri Recap. Granola can't stop your Apple Watch from buzzing mid-meeting, because that's not Granola's watch to control.
  • ✕ No speaker identification, no conversation linking. Like Siri Recap, Granola for Watch doesn't know who said what, and it doesn't connect this meeting to conversations from three weeks ago.

Granola is a well-built laptop-first tool that extended to the wrist. That's different from building for the wrist from scratch.

Apple Watch Was Not Built to Be Ignored

Every design decision in Apple Watch — the haptic taps, the notification chimes, the always-on display, the Digital Crown — is optimized for quick interactions. That's what makes it an excellent watch. It's also exactly what makes it a poor dedicated recording device.

A good conversation requires you to stop managing your wrist and be present. Siri Recap and Granola both run on hardware actively working against that. The notifications don't stop because you're in an important meeting. The calls still come in. The watch still wants your attention. Every time that happens, the capture breaks, the AI misses something, or you simply lose the thread of the conversation.

The underlying issue is not a software problem that can be patched. It is a hardware design choice. Apple Watch is a multipurpose device. Memoket Gem is not.

Gem Co-Wears with Your Apple Watch. It Doesn't Replace It.

Memoket Gem is an 11g/0.4oz AI wristband designed for one job: capturing the conversations that matter, accurately, with no interruptions. It wears alongside your Apple Watch on a co-wear band. You keep your Apple Watch exactly as it is. Gem handles what Apple Watch shouldn't have to.

  • ✓ Its own 20-hour battery. Gem carries zero load on your Apple Watch. Your watch stays charged. Gem stays recording.
  • ✓ Dual MEMS microphones built for rooms, not Siri commands. The Apple Watch mic is engineered to pick up your voice cleanly for calls. Gem's microphones are engineered to capture multiple speakers across a table, in a noisy cafe, or during a walking meeting.
  • ✓ Speaker identification. My Voice Profile trains Gem to recognize and label your voice. Your transcript knows who said what.
  • ✓ Zero notifications. When you press record on Gem, Gem's only job is to record. Nothing vibrates. Nothing interrupts. Your Apple Watch can keep doing its job on your other wrist.
  • ✓ Audio and transcript stored. If the AI summary misses something, you can go back to the original. Always.
  • ✓ Conversations connected across time. Gem links related recordings automatically. If a topic from this meeting came up three weeks ago, Gem finds that earlier recording and surfaces it. No other Apple Watch note taker does this.
  • ✓ Works everywhere, not just meetings you schedule. Client lunches, networking events, commutes, walks between offices. Gem goes where your phone stays in your pocket and your laptop stays in your bag.

For anyone using Claude or ChatGPT: Gem connects to both via MCP on Memoket Desktop. Your AI assistant can draw on your real-world conversations without you pasting a single line of context.

Siri Recap is a meaningful step. For the first time, Apple Watch can give you a rough summary of a conversation you just had. That's genuinely useful for casual moments. But it is a side feature on a multipurpose device, and the limitations are structural, not fixable with a software update.

Granola for Apple Watch is a smart extension of a good product. But it's still tethered to your phone, still running on a device designed to interrupt you, and still not purpose-built for this.

Memoket Gem is not trying to be your Apple Watch. It's the thing your Apple Watch can't be: a dedicated, always-ready, notification-free recording device with speaker identification, conversation memory, and a 20-hour battery that asks nothing of the watch on your other wrist.

Keep your Apple Watch. Add Gem. They were made to work together.

Memoket Gem is $199, in stock, and ships within 3 business days.
